Curriculum Intent

Pupils recognise the importance of Science in their daily lives through questioning the world around them and seeking to understand it. 

We want our pupils to aspire to be astronauts, forensic scientists, toxicologists or microbiologists. We hope to develop the children’s love of science, in encouraging them to create and explore through the delivery of a practical curriculum. We believe that the teaching and learning of Science should inspire children to want to know more about our world and to think and act like Scientists. 

We aim to equip the children with knowledge and to develop their understanding of the following:

Scientific Knowledge and Conceptual Understanding | The children will develop a secure understanding of key knowledge and concepts.  They will be able to use technical terminology accurately and apply their scientific knowledge where appropriate. 

The Nature, Processes and Methods of Science | ‘Working scientifically’ specifies the understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science. The application of the ‘working scientifically’ skills should be applied across all strands of the curriculum: Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Earth science. 

Spoken Language | Pupils should build an extended, specialist, specific vocabulary related to their learning and use this vocabulary for all processes and topics so they can articulate scientific concepts clearly and precisely.

Curriculum Implementation

We believe that our curriculum should develop both scientific knowledge and scientific skill; it should provide the foundations for understanding the world through Biology, Chemistry and Physics. It is a vital part of the curriculum  and essential for children to understand the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of Science.

Pupils should be encouraged to build up a body of key foundational knowledge and concepts, recognise the power of rational explanation and develop excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena.

Children should be able to explain what is occurring, predict how things behave and analyse causes:

We are delighted to announce that we have achieved the Primary Science Quality Mark (PSQM) which has been awarded to us to celebrate our commitment to excellence in science leadership, teaching and learning. The PSQM is a comprehensive evidence-based professional development that effectively develops science leadership, ensuring teachers have the knowledge, capability and support they need to transform science education and shape future generations. The school created portfolio submission of evidence from across the entire school to successfully secure this achievement.
